I Just Started My Quarterly 3-Day Water Fast — Here’s Why
I just started my quarterly 3-day water fast, and I figured it’s time I finally break down exactly why I keep coming back to this ritual every 3 months. Some of you already know I’ve gone deep down the fasting rabbit hole — daily intermittent fasting, a 30 day water fast, even dry fasting. But the 3-day quarterly reset is the one that’s earned a permanent spot on my calendar. It’s short enough that I can do it without disrupting my whole life, and long enough to actually feel the shift — physically, mentally, and spiritually. These are the real reasons I keep showing up for it. *Please don’t attempt an extended fast without doing your own research and consulting a doctor first.*

Why I Keep Coming Back to This 3-Day Reset
- Kickstarts Autophagy
- Builds Discipline & Self-Mastery
- Clears Mental Fog
- Resets My Relationship With Food
- Gives My Digestive System a Real Rest
- Why I Break My Fast With Bone Broth
- Keeps Me Honest With Myself
Kickstarts Autophagy
Three days is exactly enough time to fully deplete glycogen stores and drop into deep autophagy — your body’s built-in cellular clean-up crew. It goes looking for damaged and degenerate cells and recycles them into new ones. I don’t need 30 days for this benefit. A quarterly 3-day reset is enough to keep the process running consistently throughout the year instead of just once.

Builds Discipline & Self-Mastery
This is the one people don’t talk about enough, and honestly it’s become the main reason I keep doing this every quarter. Food is one of the most basic urges we have. It’s wired into us to eat when we’re hungry, no questions asked. So when I can sit with that urge for three straight days and simply say no — without negotiating with myself, without caving — I reclaim a level of power over my own mind that carries into everything else I do. Discipline is the root of freedom. The more I can control the most basic urges, the more I’m in control of the bigger ones: my time, my temper, my follow-through on the things I say I’m going to build.
Fasting has become a mirror for me. It doesn’t lie. Day two always shows me exactly where my discipline is at — whether I’m running my impulses, or my impulses are running me. Mastering the self is the ultimate victory. It’s the foundation for everything I build, in business and in life.

Clears Mental Fog
By day two, there’s no blood and energy being diverted to digestion, and my head gets noticeably clearer. Fasting promotes BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which helps activate stem cells in the brain and convert them into new neurons. I do my best thinking, writing, and planning on day two and three of a fast — not day one.

Resets My Relationship With Food
Three days without eating makes you appreciate food in a way that’s impossible when you’re eating three meals a day without thinking twice. My first meal breaking the fast always tastes like the best thing I’ve ever eaten. It’s a built-in gratitude reset, and it breaks the automatic, mindless eating patterns that creep back in over a normal quarter.
Gives My Digestive System a Real Rest
Your gut works hard, every single day, processing everything you put into it. A 3-day fast gives it a genuine break. When I re-feed, my digestion and metabolism come back online noticeably more efficient than before I started.
Why I Break My Fast With Bone Broth
How you re-feed matters just as much as the fast itself, and I always break mine with a big mug of bone broth instead of jumping straight into a full meal. It’s mineral-rich, gentle on a digestive system that’s been resting for three days, and loaded with collagen and glutamine that help repair and reseal the gut lining after an extended fast. It also brings back sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes I’m depleted of after three days of water only, without shocking my system with solid food too soon. I sip it slow, and it’s honestly become one of my favorite parts of the whole ritual.

Keeps Me Honest With Myself
I treat my quarterly fast like a personal audit. Every three months, I get a checkpoint to ask myself: am I actually walking the talk on the discipline I preach? It’s easy to talk about mind-body-spirit strength. It’s another thing to prove it to yourself with zero witnesses, zero applause, just you and the decision to keep going.
What My Quarterly Protocol Looks Like
Every 3 months, I do a straightforward 3-day water fast — water only, with mineral salt and electrolytes to stay safe. I break it slowly with bone broth first, then ease back into light, easy-to-digest foods rather than jumping straight into a full meal. On top of that, I still keep up daily 16-20 hour intermittent fasting as my baseline. If you’re new to fasting, don’t start with 3 days. Build up from 16 hours, to 24, to 36, and work your way there. Educate yourself first, and always consult your doctor before, during, and after an extended fast.
Final Thoughts
Every quarterly fast reminds me of the same thing: discipline isn’t punishment, it’s freedom. The version of me that can say no to food for three days is the same version of me that shows up for my business, my clients, and my community without flinching. That’s the real benefit — not just the autophagy, not just the mental clarity, but the proof, four times a year, that I am in control of me.

Have you ever tried fasting for discipline, not just health? I’d love to hear about it in the comments. May you be Mind Body Spirit Strong, all day long.
